For Picture Window

Picture Window Manual
This manual contains covers all Picture Window Pro 7.0 operations. It can be downloaded to your tablet for easy reference while using Picture Window on your main display. Last revised 24 February 2016.

Local Contrast Enhancement
This paper describes how improve image 'clarity' by enhancing contrast in low-contrast areas of the image (like clouds for example) without affecting the overall contrast. The technique uses the Sharpen transformation.

Composing Curves
This paper describes how stored brightness curves can be combined in the Brightness Curve and other curve transformations. This feature allows you to predefine curves that have various effects and then combine them and apply them in a single operation. For instance you can combine a curve that enhances shadow detail with a curve that operates at the high brightness end of the tonality scale.

Monitor and Printer Curves
This paper describes gives tips on how to make prints match the display. It discusses differences between print and display that are not accounted for in printer calibration but can be compensated by using the Picture Window Monitor/Printer Curve functions.

Linear Luminance Gradients
This paper describes how to use and create luminance gradients. A luminance gradient is a color line that moves smoothly from dark to light and can be created based on any color. Samples of luminance gradients are available as part of your Picture Window installation. They are located in your AppData folder under Digital Light and Color\Picture Window\Color Lines.

Watercolor Transformation Notes
This paper gives tips on using the Watercolor transformation to give your images the look of watercolor paintings.

Precision Gaussian Blur Notes
This paper shows how to use the Precision Gaussian Blur options. These options can be used to create convincing out-of-focus backgrounds and to reduce chroma noise. The latter is particularly noticeable in shadow areas.

Defringe Transformation Notes
This paper shows how to use the Defringe transformation to remove annoying purple fringing. It tells you how to distinguish purple fringing from chromatic aberration and provides a technique for removing this sharpness-robbing artifact.

Wave Transformation Notes
This paper shows how you can create interesting patterns for backgrounds and borders. The wave technique is adopted from Japanese painting and creates interesting and complex color patterns. The patterns can be tiled to cover any size space at a wide range of scales.

Two-Zone and Three-Zone Adjustments
This paper shows how you can enhance your images using the zone adjustment transformations. These transformations divide your image into brightness zones and let you vary contrast, brightness and saturation of each zone independently. The result is better local contrast and more vibrancy in your images.

HDR/Stack Images Transformation
This paper shows how you can cover extremely wide dynamic ranges by 'sandwiching' multiple images of the same scene shot at different exposures.

Sharpening Images
This document discusses your choice of sharpening methods, including the new Bilateral Sharpen and helps you to quickly zero in on the optimum settings.

Using the Advanced Sharpen Transformation
This document is an advanced tutorial on using the advanced sharpen feature first introduced in Picture Window 3.5.

Color Balancing Techniques
This document is an advanced tutorial on color balancing photographs with Picture Window. It covers the new features of the color balance transformation in PWP 5.0.

Color Management Terms
A glossary of color management terms that can be used as a reference or simply browsed.

Color Management
This document provides a straighforward explanation of color management and discusses related PWP features, including tips on the new monitor curves feature.

    Q-13 Grayscale Target
This target provides a 'wedge' of 20 evenly-spaced grayscale patches ranging from white to black. The target is stored in a 24 bit file to make it subject to color management. It is intended to be used with the Monitor Curves feature described in white paper above.

Colorizing B&W Photos
This document is an advanced tutorial on colorizing black and white photos with Picture Window.

Dodging and Burning
This document is an in-depth tutorial describing a number of different techniques for lightening or darkening images with Picture Window.

Creating Drop Shadows
This document describes how to use Picture Window to place offset shadows behind text, rectangles and objects with irregular boundaries.

Using Curves and Histograms
This document describes and shows you how to use curves and histograms to adjust brightness, contrast and dynamic range, and how to create a variety of special effects.

Using the Layout Transformation
This document describes and shows you how to use Picture Window's Layout transformation to create album pages, business cards, ad layouts, etc.

Creating and Using Masks
This document is an advanced tutorial on the mask feature of Picture Window. It also describes how to use mask tools and transformations. It goes details using masks with the Composite transformation to combine images.

Registering and Distorting Images
This document describes how to use the Composite transformation to register multiple images of the same subject and how to use the multipoint alignment feature in Picture Window Pro to create freehand distortions of images.

Image Retouching Techniques
This document is an advanced tutorial on using Picture Window's freehand retouching tools.
