Special Effects - Edge

Two questions:

The Help contents describes the dialogue for this transformation as having a drop down choice of colour space, however, it is not present in the dialogue. I presume it has been removed from the operation?

Second, not sure how to explain other than describing a crude example.

If I have a bunch of white objects (say solid round and square objects) on a black background, and I apply the edge transformation, the edge appears to occur in the black background, around the white items.

Is there a way the edge can be made to occur against the edge of the two tones, but on the white tone, rather than the black. I am trying to use the edge transform to generate a mask that will allow me to place a solid dark outline around some objects, but remain within the objects' space and not into the background (if that is as clear as mud).

Thanks for any help,

Marv

To your first question:
The colour space drop down selector is only visible when using edge on a colour image, when using on a black and white it does not show up (as it does not make sense to change a colour space in a BW image).

To the second one:
Try this:
Use Darken as Method in Edge, this will darken the white portion of the image.
Invert the original with Grey - Negative
Composite thes two with the inverted original as Inpot and the Edge/Darken as overlay. Set Method to Add.
Now you have a small black outline inside the original white area.

Hope it helps

Depending on the effect you want to create, you can take the result of the Edge transformation, convert it to 8-bit B&W, do a Gray/Negative to invert it, possibly use the High Contrast transformation to make really black outlines (you might have to move the slider to the left) or use Brightness Curve to adjust the outline color, and then Composite this with the original image using the Darken operation.

Thanks Jonathan and Dieter.

I had to take my computer in this morning for unanticipated service of the CPU fan, so am unable to try out your suggestions just yet. However, should get it back shortly and will give them a go.
