chrome 2000 vs SMPTE-240M vs recent printers

Post by alain »

Hi

Recent printers (for example epson 7900, but also the epson xx80 range) can print beyond the SMPTE-240M colorspace, how is this compared to chrome 2000?

BTW. The chart in the color_Management.pdf unfortunaly does'nt show the difference between chrome 2000 vs SMPTE-240M in the yellows and red/magneta colors.

Chrome 2000 was designed for scanning slide film, not for printing. SMTPE-240M (AKA AdobeRGB) is very similar to sRGB with an extended gamut in the green/cyan area. Chrome 2000 has some extra gamut in the reds and blues and a slightly different green primary.

Real world gamuts are actually 3-dimensional, with different shapes for lighter and darker colors. Generally printers are better and reproducing dark, saturated colors while displays and cameras are better at light saturated colors. There are also big differences in dynamic range.

Hi Jonathan

What do you recommend as a working space for use with RAW digital capture (16-bit), prophoto is most recommended with other programs/info sites?

I've also seen some diagrams with possible colors in "real live", which is much smaller than all possibilities.
