Sometime in the past few weeks, the current caption background changed to bright red from the white that I previously had it set to. Now, when I change the current caption background to white and then open Brightness Curve, its background is pure white. If I reopen the theme window in preferences, its background seems to have become pure white also. (If the Brightness Curve transformation is open when I change the current caption background to white, it does not change from its normal grey, but it is white if I close it and reopen it.)

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but unless you save your updated theme as default.theme, changes will not take effect on the next session. It sounds as if you may have accidentally deleted this file so you are getting the built-in default theme colors.

Installing the latest version of PWP 8 resolved the issue. I guess I should have tried that before making my previous post.
