7.0.20 frequent crashes using the Paint tool

I'm finding that 7.0.20 crashes a lot. It has always happened when I'm using the Paint tool. Yesterday it happened several times. Is there anything I can do about that, aside from saving more frequently? FWIW I'm on Windows 10, version 21H1.
No error message, the window just disappears.
I don't recall 5.0.1.11 ever crashing.
I'm going to try 8 now and see if I can hit the ground running or if I'll have a substantial learning curve.
