Clone a side branch including a not File Open top image

I understand that cloning a side branch does not include the top image if it is an Open File image.
But why not clone a side branch including the top image if the image was created by a transformation like Texture or Checkerboard. Since these transformations need some input parameters which can be later changed, the outputs from these transformations maka good candidates for cloning despite the fact that they are top images.
For example I create a texture image and run it through a few other transformations. But then I want to change a bit the source texture settings and apply the same transformations to it to compare both results. Cloning the whole branch from top down and then changing the top image settings would be an easy and PWP consistent way to achieve it. Or prehaps there is another way I am not aware of?
