OK, I'll try this later or tomorrow. And your other question: I normally process tiffs or jpgs, occasionally raw from old but good Canon Powershot G16

Thanks for you patience with this.

So it crashes even when reading tiff or jpeg files? I ask because I did update the raw file processing and lens profile libraries between 502 and 503, but this should not have affected tiffs or jpegs.

502 works. I loaded it with a few tiffs, a jpg and a CR2, and no problems.

I'm an amateur, and now work part-time and from home. So I have the time to help debugging. And I am grateful for all the work you put into PWP.

OK, by a process of elimination I think I found the problem in a change I made to the image browser in 503. To test this try the following with 503 or the latest version of PWP:

Expand the width of the area you are giving to the image browser by moving the separator to the right and shrink the size of the image browser thumbnails. Then try loading your files again.

I can get my computer to crash by doing the opposite -- narrowing the image browser area and widening the thumbnails. Then it then crashes when loading the second file. Having reproduced the problem I should be able to fix it for the next release.

I used 504 (don't have access now to 503). It behaved OK when I maximised the image-browser area and minimised the thumbnails.

When I minimised the image browser and maximised the thumbnail size (an obviously daft thing to do), PWP crashed.
