Mask Finalize Operation

Post by jfoster »

Is it intended behavior to finalize a mask operation when switching the Display Mode (Display Input, Display Preview, and Display Input and Preview Side by Side)? On a number of occasions I have switched from Side-by-Side to Display Input, to have a larger image to sample using the Color Range Tool, and was surprised to find that the Color Range Tool had Finalized and that the Freehand Outline Tool had become enabled.

I scanned the help file and do not this this case (Display Mode change finalizing mask operation) mentioned.

This is a nit I know, but seems to me to be unintuitive. Apologies if this has been discussed before.

Pending mask operations are finalized whenever you return control to the underlying transformation. This could be anything from clicking one of the buttons or other controls, clicking on the caption bar or clicking on a blank part of the transformation dialog box. Leaving a mask operation unfinalized leaves the transformation in a state where the output image is potentially different from what you will get when you click OK, so once you leave the Mask dialog box operations are finalized to keep the transformation in a consistent state. You can always un-finalize a mask operation by going back to the Mask dialog box and clicking the Undo button.

I added a sentence to cover this behavior to the help file and to Creating and Using Masks.pdf.

Ok.

When a different tool is selected within the Mask window, and a mask operation has not been finalized, a pop-up window appears to prompt the user to confirm whether to Finalize or not. Causing the Mask operation to Finalize in some cases without the prompt seems inconsistent. But I understand the distinction you describe.

Also, it seems that there is a problem with the Color Range Tool in that Click-Movement on the image results in the same range expansion on color-space channels as Shift-Click-Movement.
