Feature request : Color picker from a source image and Paint tool with a source image for color picking

Post by pierrelabreche »

Maybe there is an existing quick method to pick colors from a source image, but here are two ideas:

1) The color picker could be enhanced with an additional method to pick colors, using a source image. Color picking could be directly found by sampling a source image rather than by using a palette.

2) When coloring (grayscale) images, it would be convenient to pick colors from a source image rather than from the color picker. The user interface could work like the clone tool, with two images in the preview display area. Unlike the clone tool, the source image picker would not track paint movements, and would serve as a static reference for color, until another reference source is chosen.

You can select colors from other images using the color picker. First click on its eyedropper button and then on the image.

Here is the scenario I tried. There must be something wrong in the steps :
File > Open image A
File > Open Open image B

Image A : Transformation > Tool > Paint
The main image area shows image A
Click on the solid color block in the transformation control panel
This opens the "Paint color" Color Picker
Click on the eyedropper button
To allow picking colors from image B, click on image B in the browser.

Outcome : the paint transformation dialog closes.

OK, now I understand your first post. You can select from Image A using the eyedropper. Clicking on Image B''s thumbnail closes the transformation. Currently there is no way to pick from some other image without using the palette tool, and I don't see an easy way to implement one.

The implementation I envisioned is stated above :
The user interface could work like the clone tool, with two images in the preview display area. Unlike the clone tool, the source image picker would not track paint movements, and would serve as a static reference for color, until another reference source is chosen.

There is no simple way to make this work.

What do you think of the following concept ?

1. The color picker allows to choose an image ( any image displayer in the browser ) which is displayed instead of the color wheel.

2. The color picker dialog box can be enlarged, just like the selective color correction transformation dialog box.

3. The image in the color picker can be zoomed and panned for precision picking.

4. The paint tool transformation does not need any change.
