An update is available to Version 8.0.241 (7-Oct-2021)
The changes (taken from the update log) are:
Clone tool: removed limitation of not being able to clone color over a black and white images and the corresponding error messages.
File Open: now recognizes and can open files with an .AVIF extension as a variant of HEIF/HEIC. Still cannot save images in any of these formats. You may need to install the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store to get AVIF files to work.

Re: Update Available - Version 8.0.241
Thank you, I converted a jpeg to avif (using squoosh.app), opened in PWP, made some edits and saved back as a jpeg. The EXIF was missing but that's likely due to exiftool not recognizing the avif format.
As soon as I can update to Android 12 and can produce native avif files from my Pixel I'll confirm the process.
At least the "high compression - high quality" claim seems to be accurate:
The original jpeg = 5.37 MB, and the avif = 47.7 KB...
No apparent blocking artifacts or posterizing, as is very visible when compressing the jpeg to a comparable file size:
Interesting stuff

Good. ExifTool claims to support AVIF -- maybe squoosh does not.
