Controlling white halos in USM
The more methods of sharpening I try, the more I like USM. If not overdone, the images look mostly natural, except for halos, which are really easy to create. One effective method of dealing with halos is to suppress the light portion of them, which is more obnoxious than the darkened portion of edg...

Re: 2 and 3 zone adjustment before and after buttons
While not exactly what I think you wanted, there also is an off-label use of Composite that may help: use one version of the image as Base, the other as an Overlay, and shift-click on the Amount button at any zoom to compare the two.

Chroma Noise Reduction
I often have a problem with chroma noise in high ISO images - I find it more objectionable than the luminance noise. In AS, Noise Reduction tab, there is an option "blur chrominance only', which works fine. I can't use it in a workflow though as there is no AS widget. Is there another way? I tr...

Re: Gimp film-simulation resources
The problem is, apply it to what? Different digital cameras process their raw files distinctly,... I did some work along these lines, but it got bogged down. The idea was to photograph Makbeth chart, process the RAW using some standard settings then use Match Reference to figure out standard settin...

Re: Video editing advice
Million thanks! I have another ignorant question about the video formats - but just the big picture: what's the going standard format(s)? Here is what I would answer for photos. While there are many fine points for any of the following: 1) shoot RAW, but never send it to editors - process it and edi...

Video editing advice
Could anyone point me to some simple but sufficiently informative resources to explain the video editing technology (formats, quality, encoding, compression, codecs, editors requirements etc). Similarly, any portable software (freeware or not) that is worthwhile. If someone asked me a similar questi...

Infrared, digital cameras and purple fringes
While I was aware of digital cameras capturing light wavelengths outside of visible range, I haven't paid attention much. Below is a chance picture of a IR comm port of a laptop - invisible to a naked eye. It is rendered by the camera as bright magenta. I don't know what the wavelengths are, but pro...

Re: Flash Light Temperature
I removed EXIF:MakerNotes from a .CR2 file to see what will happen. It looks like PWP RAW defaults to 'no WB' when it can't read the WB data, but still reports 'Camera WB'.

JPG/PPW preview extracted from RAW
I understand that dcraw -e option can extract Jpegs/ppm: in-camera-processed preview images embedded in RAW. I find it useful in that I can only shoot and store RAW, always having access to the embedded Jpegs if needed (even if it's 1/4 size, that's still useful for web or previews, without having t...

Translating GIMP script to PWP workflow
This looks like a challenge that Den may like: what would be the simplest workflow that could consistently process images in this fashion? http://www.flickr.com/photos/28653536@N07/2879128071/#/photos/28653536@N07/2879128071/lightbox/ p.s. Would it be a good idea to start a depository of PWP workflo...
